The properties of Breathwork

Activates the Sympathetic Nervous System

The side of our nervous system often referred to as “fight or flight”. It is active when we are exerting energy, concentrating, problem-solving and when our body produces adrenaline. It is also triggered by stress as well as determination.

Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System

This side of our nervous system helps us to ‘rest and digest’. It is activated when we are eating, resting, sleeping, and recovering. Its main purpose is to regulate bodily functions like digestion and urination and to conserve energy to be used later.

Calming

These exercises can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, recover from intense exercise, or reconnect the mind and body by focusing on the breath. They have the effect of being physically cooling as well as slowing down the heart rate.

Energizing

Energizing cards will help you to warm up the body from within, create internal energy, increase your blood pressure, and speed up your heart rate. Use these exercises to improve motivation and focus, and to get energy at any time of the day.​

Produces Nitric Oxide​

Nitric Oxide, a gas we create by breathing through only our nose, causes our blood vessels to widen, which increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. This helps get more oxygen and nutrients to our muscles, increases the amount of oxygen our body can use (VO2 max), and improves our physical fitness. It is also a natural mood enhancer and even improves libido.​

Produces Carbon Dioxide

These exercises can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, recover from intense exercise, or reconnect the mind and body by focusing on the breath. They have the effect of being physically cooling as well as slowing down the heart rate.​

Lung Expansion

By practicing these exercises, you can increase your lung capacity – the amount of air you canhold in your lungs. This reduces the number of times we need to breathe which leads to more efficient breathing, causes less stress on our lungs, and even helps us to live longer. Additionally, more oxygen to the brain improves focus and clarity while more oxygen to the cells and muscles has a positive effect on physical performance.​
